OMG I just tried a variation on the almond date truffles, as recommended in Bon Appetit. Omit the cinnamon and add 1T instant espresso powder (I used Starbuck's Via). Do not skimp on the cocoa powder, and roll them in unsweetened coconut. These are to die for.

I posted a comment on these treats before. They are actually from her blog and sound very similar to what lisacohen is suggesting. Almond date truffles have NO added sugar, just dates, cocoa powder, unsweetened coconut and almond butter ( plus salt and vanilla). They are rolled in chopped almonds, and I have seen variations in Bon Appetit with a coconut coating. I have made them a few times and will be doing so this weekend to take to work instead of cookies. The process of forming the balls and rolling them is almost meditative, my stress reliever this holiday season.

Thank you so much Oaktoncook and lisacohen. Those are perfect suggestions! Hadn't thought along those lines. I am sure my friend will eat dates.

I'm not near my cookbooks at the moment but the first thing that comes to mind is....Does he eat dates? This site that I'm linking to has a bunch of energy bars and balls (the latter of which can be billed as healthy truffles which would make a nice gift for someone who is into healthy vegan eating - and it's raw and easy to make too) that are mostly vegans use dates (or maybe occasionally agave) as sweeteners: http://www.edibleperspective.com/home/2011/2/15/balls-bars.html
You can go to the site's recipe index and scroll down to see more varieties of bars & energy balls to choose from.
