This is about the third time I have attempted to review this book and I think the reason I stumbled in earlier attempts is that I really like this book and I want to make sure I do it justice in my review. It's not that this particular book is so new in what it is trying to say or that the recipes are so radically different to recipes I have in other books, but I really am finding this book such a pleasurable book to read and cook from.
Diana Henry's message with this book is quite simple - buy & cook seasonally, using the produce thoughtfully and carefully in ways that maximise taste and flavour and minimise wastage. She gives ideas for using other leftovers bits and pieces like ends of bread and cheeses or extra cooked grains, the leftovers from a roast chicken etc and how to incorporate them into recipes that taste great and are simple and inexpensive to prepare. I would hesitate to call this book a 'thrift' book though, more a gentle reminder to look beyond the initial preparation you had in mind for an ingredient and encourage you to use what's left as the building block to another meal.
The recipes are mostly everyday style dishes. A lot of the recipes in the book are vegetarian or sympathetic to vegetarians (ie small changes can be made to make them so) but for meat eaters there are some dedicated chapters to beef, seafood, lamb...
